Abstract

The advantages of performing laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of acute appendicitis vs. conventional technique in a Teaching Hospital between 2016 and 2017 in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador were analyzed. Through a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study, 276 patients being appendectomized, divided into laparoscopic technique (120) and conventional technique (156). Statistical analysis was performed in SPSS version 21 software. Laparoscopic technique accounted for 43% of the total appendectomies, 59.17% (71) was performed in women, young adults with 76.67%. The average time of laparoscopic appendectomy was longer compared to the conventional technique (64.28 vs. 45.72), however, a shorter hospital stay was observed in the laparoscopic group, with 110 cases vs. 75 cases of the conventional technique both in 24 hours There was a lower frequency of complications with the laparoscopic technique (7 cases) in relation to open surgery (39 cases), the most frequent being serohematoma with 14%. Statistically significant association was demonstrated between the surgical technique used and postoperative complications (p = 0.002). Laparoscopic technique decreases the frequency of complications (OR: 0.935). Laparoscopic appendectomy is an effective technique that has the advantage of shorter hospitalization time and minimal complication rate.
