Abstract

Preterm birth remains a major health problem worldwide, resulting in high neonatal mortality. It is a clinical condition that not only inflicts financial and emotional distress, but can also lead to permanent disability. The present study was conducted to determine risk factors and preventive measures related to preterm birth. This study was observational, retrospective and analytical, which evaluated all pregnant women in a hospital in the city of Guayaquil. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with SPSS version 21. 810 cases were evaluated with a mean age of 28.33 ± 6.1 years (48.7% premature). According to the results of the present study, sexual intercourse during the previous week, multiparity, short intergenic period, preeclampsia, fetal abnormality, rupture of membranes, hypertension and leakage of amniotic fluid, respectively, were risk factors for preterm birth. On the other hand, iron consumption, cephalic presentation, systematic disease, history of caesarean section, prenatal care and mother's weight could be considered protective factors.
