Abstract

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a frequent pathology in women of reproductive age and occupies one of the first places of medical attention. The article reviews the available and updated literature on the clinical characteristics, diagnostic method and therapeutic approach. A search of indexed publications in databases was carried out using keywords. The search was delimited between 2014 and January 2020. The inclusion criteria considered the type of methodological design, sample size, type of treatment, both experimental and control, year of publication. A total of 26 articles with an aspect of interest for the review were selected. There is uniformity of criteria in which PID includes a series of inflammatory conditions of the female reproductive tract, the complications of which are infertility, acute pelvic pain and / or ectopic pregnancy. The risk factors are related, among others, to sexual behavior. The combination of antimicrobial agent regimens consistent
with an outpatient antibiotic regimen that adequately covers microorganisms is recommended. For severe PID, hospitalization with intravenous treatment and imaging aimed at ruling out ATO are indicated. Surgical treatment is reserved for cases that do not respond to medical treatment.
