Abstract

Bacterial urinary tract infection is a common pathology in pregnant women. It is an important risk factor associated with the development of neonatal sepsis. Neonatal sepsis is an invasive infection generally accompanied by bacteremia that occurs in the newborn in the first month of life. It is one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. The objective of this research was to show the relationship between urinary tract infection in the pregnant mother and morbidity and mortality in the neonate. A case-control study was conducted that included an intentional and nonprobabilistic sample of 224 patients, divided into two interest groups: 70 cases of neonates born to women diagnosed with the infection and 154 controls of neonates born to healthy women. A bivariate analysis was performed applying the Chi square test and estimating the Odds Ratio with the support of the OpenEpi software, v3. The study showed that newborns born to mothers with urinary tract infection have a higher risk of developing neonatal sepsis, and suggests that this pathology, once
diagnosed, can be treated effectively avoiding serious consequences for the health of the newborn.
