Abstract

The causes and type of trauma of the pediatric polytraumatized patient were determined in a Hospital in the city of Babahoyo, Ecuador in the year 2014 to 2015. This is a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study, where 5,347 patients were treated. the ages according to the statistics department records in the Emergency Service during the study period, all the medical records of the patients who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed, collecting 93 patients between 5-14 years with a diagnosis of polytrauma (1, 74%). 74% correspond to the male sex, falls greater than the lift were the most frequent cause with 45% of cases; Traumatic skull trauma + closed fracture was the most frequent type of injury with 47%. Other etiologies with significant frequencies were traumatic brain injury + fracture exposed in 20%, and traumatic brain injury + abdominal trauma with 16%. 80% of patients reported with polytrauma received prehospital care. The main treatment that was provided was hemodynamic stabilization and complementary treatment such as cervical spine protection and fracture plaster splint placement.
