Abstract

The objective of this investigation is to determine the causes of conversion of laparoscopic surgery to conventional in patients of a hospital in northern Guayaquil during the period of 2017 and 2018. It is an observational, retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study, The sample consists of 365 patients with cholelithiasis. The statistical package SPSS version 21 was used for information processing. 29% (106) corresponded to the male sex and 71% to the female sex. Of the 39 patients who had conversion from laparoscopic cholecystectomy to conventional surgery, 72% were predominantly female. 58% were over 60 years of age. The main causes of conversion of laparoscopic cholecystectomy to conventional surgery were: difficulty in visualizing the anatomy of the operative area (54%), uncontrollable bleeding (33%) and adhesions (26%). It is concluded that risk factors can influence the conversion of laparoscopic surgery to conventional surgery. It is advisable to carry out an analytical study that demonstrates this association and in turn estimate the risk of each identified factor.
